It’s hard to put faith in the weather forecast, especially when the prior evening was so sombrely disappointing! But morning broke with the suns rays bringing brightness and warmth to a cool and wet night, even the locals were taking it in.

Looking across the valley from my roof top tent it’s hard to believe that not all that long ago there was a lake.
It wasn’t long before everything was nice and dry; a quick breakfast and pack saw me ready to leave before 9am, the first stop being the bakery for a quick morning tea.

I must admit I’d been looking forward to this leg of the trip as it’s been one that I’ve wanted to complete for quite some time now. Following on from the bakery I turned off onto Middlingbank Rd then took the turn off along Rocky Plain Rd and after what felt like an eternity I hit Eucumbene Rd. From there Nimmo Rd was a hop skip and jump away.

After crossing the Eucumbene River, Nimmo Rd takes an upward trajectory cutting through Nimmo Nature Reserve before the very confusing and unmarked veer off to Island Bend Fire Trail. From here the trail gets a little rougher, rough enough for me to wish I’d aired down for a little bit of comfort!

After a few closed gates I finally made it to my destination, Gungarlin River Campground!

The place is absolutely amazing! So much so that I spent the whole afternoon sipping beverages and taking it all in prior to cooking up dinner and enjoying a cheeky dessert.

With the day coming to a close I decided to spark the fire up, culminate my thoughts and ponder whether to spend an extra day.

Even at 2am when my weak bladder gets the better of me, the Gungarlin is still picture perfect!

Another perfect morning and another amazing sunrise, with the trip sadly coming to a close I enjoyed a slow morning downing a couple of coffee’s and packing ever so slow.

With Island Bend Fire Trail leading me out of the Gungarlin River Campground, I bid the Snowy Mountains farewell till next time – hopefully soon!
