2026 Winter Camp, solo day 2

Posted on 20 July 202618 October 2026

Mother nature holds a surprise for us every day; today a cold, wet and foggy morning greeted me. To be honest I’d rather be out in the elements than in the big apple, so as hard as mother nature tried, she didn’t come close to breaking me 🙂.

I rugged up and made my way down the rooftop tent ladder, I was in dire need of a coffee!

Before long the sun started breaking through the morning fog and doing it’s thing across the valley, which for any seasoned camper is great news. Nothing beats packing up a dry camp.

I must admit, it was a very difficult decision to up and leave. I was the only person camped at Mary Flynn, it was quiet, nature was alive around me and I was basking it all in.

Though I knew this wasn’t going to last being a Friday morning, in a few hours the weekend warriors would start arriving.

And with that thought, I packed and started the journey up the Bridle Track to Hill End with a pit stop for some lunch.

After airing the tyres up at the end of the track I decided to make a detour to Green Valley to top up my firewood supplies, there’s nothing worse than not having a warm fire on a winter camp!

Slicing up firewood sure as hell makes you thirsty, a quick pit stop at the Hill End Micro Pub quenched that dry mouth feeling…

At this point I thought I’d try and do a remake of a photo I took back on 11th August 2013.

And below, 10th July 2026:

Not much changes at Hill End!

With the day starting to slip away I decided to cook up dinner, devour dessert and get the fire going before darkness set in.

As much as I love the Xiaomi Ultra 15 camera, it’s lack of any ability to adjust aperture makes taking photos of objects such as food very poor. Definitely a feature I really miss from the iPhone.

On a side note, you may wonder why I used my fire pit over the campground pit? Said fire was small and in the larger pit with high walls I would’ve froze my arse off!

As usual the star show was amazing, something I absolutely love about the Australian bush.

With the ambient temperature closing in on fridge temp, I decided to call it a night and bunk down.
