Days 6, 7, 8 & 9; Tom Groggin to Denison

Posted on 18 November 20242 August 2025

With the Upper Murray River starting to swell, the weather crisp and gloomy, but clearing we left Tom Groggin with haste. Our next stop Sundance Bakehouse Jindabyne and then pushing through Adaminaby to Denison Campground.

We arrived at Denison just shy of 4pm with firewood to burn and a darkening outlook on the horizon, our hopes hinged on a dry night slowly slipping!

With an early fire, dinner and desert we kicked back waiting for the inevitable rain that finally arrived well after we bunked down for the night.

And just like that, day seven arrived, so did the sun and coffee!

Post some fluffling around and a quick stop at the bakery in Adaminaby we decided to venture to Long Plain Hut and campground to do some “surveying”. Needless to say, the campground is small and the hut is, well just that – a hut!

With the weather starting to turn it on for us the next stop was one I’d been looking forward to, Yarrangobilly Caves, for me that meant a chance to visit the famed Thermal Pool!

Brad decided to head off and do his own thing, so I made my way down the steep descent to the thermal pool all the while thinking about the walk back up…

And the best thing of all, having the place all to myself!

After surviving the climb out and returning back to Denison an afternoon nap was on the cards. Then dinner and an evening fishing with no success, just an amazing sunset.

With the last full day of serenity dawning; breakfast, coffee and some R&R were on the cards. The plan was to spend the afternoon hiking to the mouth of Lake Eucumbene and the River and return following the bank fishing.

It was a cracker of a day!

After walking almost 10km’s I returned to camp, fishless but all the better for the experience. Too buggered to cook a meal I did what any grown man with well powered 12V system could only do, knock up some toasties for dinner!

And so the final night came to an end by the campfire.

After a very leisurely pack up the final stop at Kuma Pies (Cooma) provided the energy required to return home.

Nine days and just under 895km later the trip was sadly over!
