I’m fortunate in a way, working for almost 20 years in the public health service has enabled me to bank up a lot of leave, getting a Thursday and Friday off was music to my boss’s ears. Though it probably didn’t make much of a dent to my overall balance.
On to more important things, meat pies and cakes!!

I don’t often stop at the Lawson Cake Shop, and admittedly it’s not my favourite bakery, but it’s a consistent good with my only complaint being pie temperature; if you like your pies steaming hot then this is the place for you. And while the custard tart looks a little average in the photo, it was damn good.
Next stop (apart from the road works on Jenolan Caves Rd) was at the potential camp site which I must admit I found after doing some research post watching a Shad Donaghue YouTube vid.
And the spot is a cracker!

With the time being just after noon on a Thursday and not having seen another vehicle for at least an hour I decided to do some exploring for potential camp and fishing spots without FOMO on the newly found camp spot.
With two tracks to choose from I took what I thought would be the quicker option (with some FOMO playing mind games), quicker turned out to be rutted and muddy!

After some low range negations I arrived at the headwaters of a river that I’ll keep unnamed. The water was running a little dirty and the surrounds very overgrown and “snakey”. Having had my fair share of reptilian encounters and at this point flying solo I decided to not to chance it, as tempting as pulling my fishing rod out of the pack was.
I did chuck on my new Spika snake gaiters for some added insurance as I did do some walking.

After walking upstream I found another small campground that will most definitely be on my list to tick off.

And there was a river crossing with a mildly chopped up exit – which features in the YouTube short in part two of this write up.

The return trip back to the campsite was very uneventful bar some slightly overgrown sections on the track and with a full afternoon to kick back and relax I didn’t waste any time!

With daylight savings in full force the longer days for me at least are most welcoming, you get to cook your tea (Aussie slang for dinner) in some special places with an amazing lighting experience. Just kick back with a drink and cook.

And before you know it, you’re sitting by the campfire.

While waiting for Brad to arrive, the clouds put on a night show.

Brad finally arrived near 11pm, battered and bruised after hitting a kangaroo on route to Oberon. The perils of night travel through the Aussie bush.
After a couple drinks by the fire we retired for the night and woke to an overcast and gloomy morning. For me anyway, a coffee fixes any gloom!

After some closer examination of the front of Brads car we decided to pack and head to Oberon prior to commencing the next leg of the trip, which strangely enough we hadn’t decided on yet!

To be continued…
