Oberon is home to the Big Trout, Lake Oberon, Mayfield Gardens and also noteworthy; it’s main industries are farming, forestry and wood products! And a little known fact being that Oberon on winter solstice 2025 was the coldest town by daytime temperature.
I’d also like to make a bold statement, the bakery next to The Royal Hotel does the best pie in town!
Onto more important things, the continuation of Part 1 of this write up!
Brad and myself ended up backtracking to Oberon, more so due to the fact that he was wanting to purchase a step ladder to ease the burden of loading his newly purchased kayak onto the roof of his ute.
Brad was also keen on getting the yak out on its maiden voyage, so a suitable place to paddle needed to be found, onward to Burraga we pushed!
Strangely I didn’t take any pics of Brads maiden voyage and neither any of Burraga.
It wasn’t until Brad had finished the paddle and packed the yak that we’d decided where to next.
Abercrombie River National Park was another one of those places needing a tick next to its name, and guess what…
Mentioning the word steep does not do the tracks of Abercrombie River NP any justice, it is f%#ken steep! It is a place of relatively untouched beauty.
After thinking we were going to settle in for the night at The Beach campground it suddenly dawned on me that we hadn’t booked via the NPWS website. After a quick check our worst fears were realised, it was booked out, likely ghost bookings but Brad didn’t want to chance it.
So we packed and headed to Silent Creek campground, which in my opinion was equally as good.
It wasn’t long before I was kicking back and on the cans again!
With a park fire ban in place the night was relatively quiet and we turned in early.
The next morning we woke to a storm, which in Abercrombie River NP terms is not a great place to be as the tracks to get out if I haven’t mentioned are steep. With rain clouds circling and the rain looking like it was ready to set in we packed swiftly.
Shortly after packing the clouds broke and the sun came out! We didn’t want to chance it and left to tackle the climb out.
