X on OpenBSD article
"The OpenBSD installer now asks if you want plan to run X. It seems that it sets up a basic template for you. As installed, I ran startx and was greeted by the friendly face of fwwm. I haven't installed OpenBSD for a couple of years now, but as I have noticed on other UNIX like operating systems XFree86 is no longer used, thus making configuration a whole lot easier for the X window system. If only X.Org was around when I used to use OpenBSD - configuration would have been so simple! The article has now been updated to reflect that it was written in February 2003 and doesn't apply to newer versions that use X.Org.
Honest reviews:
Pro Angler 1/2wt Master: My first venture into the world of twig style fly rods, nice and simple to cast, the action in my opinion is a little to fast for small streams. The huge bonus is the 7' length which helps you sneak in through thick overhead foliage and being 4 pieces make it a pleasure to carry in your backpack all day long!
Sage XP 4wt: This has to be one of the best fly rods I have ever laid my greasy little fingers on, its fast enough to tackle large streams and yet subtle enough to flick onto spring creeks without creating to much of a bow. Its a shame Sage dont make these anymore!
Sage TCR 6wt: My favourite fly rod of all time, casting into blustering southerlies or punching out a full length of line to a distant sipper this is the rod that can do it!
Scott X2s 7wt: I bought this as a replacement for the Sage SLT 7wt, very nice actioned rod, Scott rate it as fast but after using a TCR nothing seems fast anymore! The rod has enough power to punch out a full length of line, but enough subtlety to place a dry fly in close. My main gripe is after giving it a work out the ferule joints came lose in all four sections, keep an eye out on this.
Sage SLT 7wt: A great rod for the super relaxed caster, this rod taught me to slow down and wait for that back cast to straighten right out, as much as I wanted to keep it there was too much surplus rod stock!
Sage FLi 9wt: The rank outsider may be the best name for this rod, full of power yet great value for money. It handles big flies and strong salty winds, as much as I dislike salt water fishing this is the rod that gets me out on the coast.
Burke & Wills Redgum Swag: What can I say without being politically incorrect? Dont waste your money on one of these swags, I bought the top of the line Redgum double, over $600 worth of swag and it leaks water like a siv. I have sent the swag back, made feel stupid by the people at Burke & Wills, had it repaired and it still leaks - if you want a wet nights sleep buy one of these if not look elsewhere!
Cooper STT Tires: I am dubious as to whether I should give these tyres a great wrap or steer people clear! The STT is a tough tyre but it has some major fall backs, the tread is just not spaced widely enough therefore rocks and debris get caught within the tread and dont dislodge until coaxed, there are also some chips and tears on the sidewalls which worry me, the main culprit is one that happened with less than 5000km's done. |
29 August 2007 Think Geek Howto: Compaq B1900 broadcom wireless setup. Quick and dirty how to set up the bcm43xx wireless driver for Fedora Core 7 on a Compaq B1900 notebook.
This is all done as root, so make sure you either log in as root or su.
Edit yum.conf
Execute the following:
I had previously extracted the softpaq windows driver for the wireless card (using windows) and copied it to /tmp/bcm. I downloaded this from the broadcom links on the ndiswrapper website.
Let the magic begin:
Add alias wlan0 ndiswrapper to /etc/modprobe.conf
Blacklist the non-ndiswrapper driver:
Start up System Config Network:
When the gui opens, click 'New' and in the select device type select Wireless, click 'Forward' and follow the prompts.
28 June 2007
After some deep and long thought (and yes this was difficult) I have pulled the old 17" Powerbook out, dusted it and installed the current Mac operating system, OS X v10.4.10. Its been an interesting experience to go back to what I class as the 'BEST' operating system available on the market. I am all for open source, the Linux's and *BSD's out there are now in a superior class of thier own, but for quality nothing beats a Mac, from the outer shell of the notebook to the quality of the operating system. As I have said in the past, I can enjoy the power of the unix shell, develop shell scripts and have the two applications that I miss the most from my Windows days, Microsoft Office and Photoshop. All this has come at an experimentative (is that a word!?) error, I initially installed OS X with the UFS (Unix File System) option, as to which I have found out the hard way is not the best path to take. The native Mac HSF+ (Hierarchical File System) is the recommended choice. I wont go into why :-) 12 June 2007Back from the big freeze June long weekend in NSW spells the end of trout fishing season (for rivers and streams) and the last chance to get out on a river to catch some early brown trout spawners. Where else but the mecca of all trout fishing in NSW, the Snowy Mountains, does one go to fulfill the great trout fishing dream of brown trout doing thier thing on gravelly river beds to cement the future generations. The weather was extremely cold, wet, windy, icy and did I mention cold? The quality of fishing was fantastic, and after dropping two fish within metres of the bank I finally managed to pull one in, the fish was well and truely spent. A few casts later and a fiesty brown was played onto the bank, both fish staying still for the regulatory pose and after a very quick revival swam away to fight another day. All in all a great weekend was had with the TCR getting a good work out and the new Lamson Waterworks Litespeed Hard Alox (what a mouthfull) reel getting christened in the nicest way!
RedHat Enterprise Linux
At the end of each day I found myself leaving at least 45 minutes earlier than the rest of the class as I had finished my practice exercises well before anyone else. But all was not lost and I did learn quite a few new commands (well commands that I had already known but not bothered looking further into). In the whole scheme of things the instructor did say that I should have been enrolled in a far more advanced course and he did hint at some form of future employment My overall opinion is that RedHat is making Linux server administration easier for the masses, most things are gui driven and unlike the good old days when I started using Linux (which was RedHat 5.1, back in the late 90's) not much command line experience is needed. But this is typical of most Linux distro's these days, it seems like they are trying to convert the masses from using Windows to an easy to use gui based Linux. At work I have now set up a DNS server, web server and samba server all using gui configurations, installing applications is all gui driven aswell and when I try to compile an application from its source I get a gcc not found error, and why would you need to compile from source when you can either use yum or install straight from an rpm. Almost ludicrous I say, gone are the days of hard work to get an application to work! I must say that one great thing came from finishing the daily course grind early every day, I got to check out Compleat Angler in the heart of Melbourne, being a Winston fly rod dealer meant I got to hold in my hot little hands the LT 5 piece 3wt rod, which stands a not so tall 6'9". In my opinion this is the perfect twig fly rod, it felt stiffer than the Sage TXL, yet softer than the Pro Angler Master 1/2. Though I didnt get a chance to cast it I have a funny feeling that this will be my next fishing rod purchase!
