A very warm summer-like morning in Fremantle, it was my first time there and what a fantastic place. A panoramic moment capturing all that was happening.

Bring back the PF Project! For those of you who are long term shintara readers you may remember some time back I was involved in a PF project, which was basically using a spare PC, installing OpenBSD (a UNIX like operating system) on it and then building a firewall/gateway/router on it. Well good news is to come in this area, for those of you that dont know I use the DSL connection at my parents place to host a webserver, a DNS server and an IRC server. All has been going quite well with it, its stability cant be questioned due to the installation of one of these babies: APC Smart-UPS XL 2200VA, which is used to power 3 computers a modem and router. In the very near future one more UPS will be purchased for a far greater chance of uptime in case of a prolonged power failure, at the moment I have estimated approximately four hours worth of battery usage if there is a power failure - this should be ample time as most of the power failures (or black outs) seem to last from 2 minutes up to an hour. Some time in the near future, possibly when my hosting at 2m runs out, I will move shintara.net onto my own webserver for hosting. At present shintara.org and irc.shintara.org reside on this webserver. I still need to spend time securing and configuring the apache webserver, and then configuring a mail server before all this can take place. |
WA, Perth and Fremantle... Working in the surrounding suburbs of Perth was relaxing in itself, whenever I go interstate I am always comparing the cities to Sydney, and every other city makes Sydney feel like your sitting in a formula one car trying to hold on to each day is it ever so quickly passes by. I think that Perth is one of the most livable cities, kind of like a large scale Adelaide with all that and a lot more, looking through my hotel window in the morning you can see people walking to work, it can almost be described as a lazy stroll, I would like to feel like that every day! Over the weekend I spent half of the Saturday driving and walking around Fremantle seeing its sandstone buildings and enjoying the fabulous day. Sunday was spent on the tourist drive along the Sunset Coast, the only problem was the weather, a combination of wind, rain and shine got the better of me and I headed home quickly. I was able to see the Swan river from my hotel room, its an amazing river and the width is enormous - I would say its larger than Sydney harbour but not as congested. |
But last time you mentioned...? I would have really liked to be able to rebuild the shintara.net interface, and the idea I had for it was almost complete but time and resources have taken thier toll on me, its either spend months rebuilding the front end and recoding the back end of shintara or alternatively try to update the site as much as possible. At this stage its the latter choice, I will try to update as much as I can - if you havent noticed all the UNIX articles are now complete and uploaded for viewing, hopefully there will be more to come. Then there is the PF Project which is at the top of my prioroties and there will be quite a bit of feedback to here on what I do and if I achieve my goals. More to come over the next few weeks. |
Comments or Feedback anyone? Name: Watchdog Great to see this landmark website back online! Good to see a site where no holds are barred, no punches pulled, no prisoners taken. Name: joe [Silver] is ok but the people on the other end are RUDE!!! |
