Current Writings: From roaring river to sparsely spaced ponds My first encounter with the Turon River was before my passion for fly fishing began, I always remembered it as a fast flowing river, there was always the sound of rushing water as it travelled from its upper reaches towards its end at the Macquarie junction. Even twelve months ago, when the locals were saying that the river was dead and there were no fish in it, I managed to find a trout...

X on OpenBSD article
"The OpenBSD installer now asks if you want plan to run X. It seems that it sets up a basic template for you. As installed, I ran startx and was greeted by the friendly face of fwwm. I haven't installed OpenBSD for a couple of years now, but as I have noticed on other UNIX like operating systems XFree86 is no longer used, thus making configuration a whole lot easier for the X window system. If only X.Org was around when I used to use OpenBSD - configuration would have been so simple! The article has now been updated to reflect that it was written in February 2003 and doesn't apply to newer versions that use X.Org.

26 June 2006 Laying out the lard After months (and more months) of careful thought and consideration I have come to the conclusion that I need to lose weight and start living a healthy lifestyle. I eat a lot of take away food, pizza, McDonalds, Hungry Jacks, KFC, Red Rooster, kebabs, fish 'n chips, pies... the list just keeps getting bigger and so has the size of my waist. Over the last weekend I purchased a new mountain bike and along with my habit of walking hundreds of metres (possibly even kilometers) along the banks of streams whilst stalking fish I am moving towards becoming a little like my former self - well if I can lose a few kilo's of body fat and get a six pack I will be one happy chap. So over the next few weeks I am going to develop my two month diet, follow it as strictly as possible and publish the results right here!
The anti-spam project shintara has suffered fiercely from the effects of the afore mentioned web crawler that relentlessly pours more and more spam from its pores into my simple comments form that plasters this index page. For a moment the spam subsided, I thought this was the end, but it was the calm before the storm - the bombarding had not yet begun. On a number of occasions I have had to clear out the spam posts, to find that half an hour later there would be twice as many. I needed to formulate a plan of action against this. I put together a simple php script to catch the spammer out, log the IP address in a blacklist file and disable that IP address from posting on the site. What I will do on the next update is publish the blacklist of IP addresses, they will be freely available for anyone to use against these spam bot attacks. Analysis of this data may also show some patterns that these bots follow, will be an interesting next few updates.
